Is Windows 10 Still Safe in 2026? A Simple Guide for Seniors

If you have a computer with Windows 10, you may have seen messages telling you that support has ended. That sounds scary, especially when the computer still seems to be working perfectly fine.

First, do not panic. Your computer is not suddenly going to shut down or stop working.

However, there are a few things you should know so you can decide what to do next.

What Happened to Windows 10?

Microsoft officially ended regular support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025.

This means Microsoft no longer provides regular free security updates, new features, or technical support for Windows 10 computers.

Your computer will still turn on. You can still check your email, look at Facebook, watch videos, shop online, and use your programs.

The problem is that a computer without security updates can become easier for hackers, viruses, and harmful programs to attack over time.

Think of security updates like repairs to the locks on your house. Your current locks may still work, but new security problems may be discovered. Without updates, those problems may not be repaired.

How Do I Know If I Have Windows 10?

Here is an easy way to check:

  1. Click the Start button in the bottom-left corner of your screen.

  2. Click Settings.

  3. Click System.

  4. Scroll down and click About.

  5. Look under Windows specifications.

You should see either Windows 10 or Windows 11 listed.

If you already have Windows 11, you do not need to worry about the end of Windows 10 support.

Can My Computer Upgrade to Windows 11?

Some Windows 10 computers can upgrade to Windows 11 for free.

To check:

  1. Click the Start button.

  2. Open Settings.

  3. Click Update & Security.

  4. Click Windows Update.

  5. Select Check for updates.

If your computer qualifies, you may see an option to download and install Windows 11.

You can also use Microsoft’s free PC Health Check tool to find out whether your computer meets the requirements.

Only download this tool from Microsoft’s official website. Do not click on a random pop-up or advertisement offering to check your computer.

What If My Computer Cannot Run Windows 11?

If your computer cannot upgrade, you have three main choices.

Choice 1: Keep Using Windows 10 With Extra Security Updates

Microsoft offers a Consumer Extended Security Updates program, also called ESU.

This program provides important security updates for eligible Windows 10 computers through October 12, 2027.

Depending on your account and settings, you may be able to enroll by syncing your computer settings, using Microsoft Rewards points, or paying a one-time fee. Microsoft currently lists the paid option as $30, but prices and options can change.

To see if your computer qualifies:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Select Update & Security.

  3. Select Windows Update.

  4. Look for an option that says Enroll now.

ESU can give you more time, but it is not a permanent solution. It does not add new features or make an old computer run faster.

You can read the latest details on Microsoft’s official Windows 10 ESU page.

Choice 2: Upgrade Your Current Computer

If Windows Update says your computer can run Windows 11, the upgrade may be free.

Before you begin, save your important pictures, documents, and other files. This gives you a backup in case something goes wrong.

You do not need the most expensive backup drive. A basic portable drive with enough space for your personal files should be fine for most people.

Choice 3: Replace the Computer

If your computer is several years old, runs slowly, freezes often, or cannot use Windows 11, replacing it may make more sense than trying to fix it.

You do not need an expensive gaming computer for basic everyday tasks.

For email, Facebook, shopping, video calls, and watching videos, look for a Windows 11 computer with:

  • At least 8 GB of memory

  • At least 256 GB of storage

  • A screen that is comfortable to read

  • A full-size keyboard

  • A built-in camera and microphone

  • Windows 11 already installed

If a new computer is outside your budget, a professionally refurbished Windows 11 computer may be a good alternative.

Be sure the listing clearly says that Windows 11 is installed. Also check the seller’s rating, return policy, and warranty before buying.

Should I Buy a New Computer Right Away?

Not necessarily.

If your computer can upgrade to Windows 11, try that option first.

If it cannot upgrade but still works well, the Extended Security Updates program may give you more time to decide.

You may want to replace the computer if:

  • It is very slow

  • It freezes or crashes often

  • The battery no longer holds a charge

  • It cannot run Windows 11

  • Repairs would cost almost as much as another computer

  • You feel uncomfortable using it for banking or shopping

Do not let a salesperson pressure you into buying the most expensive computer in the store. A basic Windows 11 laptop is usually enough for normal home use.

Watch Out for Fake Windows Warnings

Scammers know that people are confused about Windows 10. You may see fake pop-ups claiming that your computer is infected or that you must pay immediately to upgrade.

Do not call a phone number shown in a pop-up.

Do not allow a stranger to control your computer remotely.

Do not give anyone your password, credit card number, or banking information.

Windows upgrades and security options should be handled through the Settings menu or Microsoft’s official website.

If a warning appears and you are unsure, close the window. Ask someone you trust before clicking anything.

Make Your Computer Easier to Use

If you replace your computer, you can also make it more comfortable by adding a large-print keyboard or an easy-to-use wireless mouse.

These are optional, but they can make using a computer easier if you have trouble seeing small letters or using a laptop touchpad.

My Simple Recommendation

If your Windows 10 computer is working well, check whether it can upgrade to Windows 11 before spending any money.

If it cannot upgrade, look into Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates program while you decide what to do.

If the computer is already slow, unreliable, and several years old, replacing it with a basic Windows 11 computer may be the easiest long-term choice.

Most importantly, take your time. You do not have to purchase a new computer because a pop-up tells you to. Check the facts, protect your files, and choose the option that makes sense for your needs and budget.
